The Remote and the Prayer

Last night I was invited to my friend Cindy's house for dinner. The featured menu item was her mom's fried fish. I had been treated to this wonderful fish many years ago, on a visit to her mom's farm. On that summer night, the fish was Walleye, caught by Jeff, Cindy's brother-in-law, on Lake Erie (if memory serves me right). Last night's fish was perch, and quite good.

Ann, Cindy's mother, has been trying to get me to a fish fry ever since that summer. As a matter of fact, they were trying to get ahold of me over the July 4th holiday of 2002. They didn't know that I was in the Intensive Care Unit of Jewish Hospital, recovering from a stroke I'd suffered on July 2nd. Sometime during the next two weeks, I was able to ride to the fish fry with Cindy, but was unable to eat very well, still trying to regain mobility and strength on my left side.

Well, here we are, a little more than nine years later, and this time it is Ann who has suffered a stroke. Her's was in January 2011. She is now living with Cindy, during her recovery. She is getting better day-by-day, but still has a very long way to go. Ann is completely unable to cook right now, so this particular fish dinner was Cindy's version of her mom's fried fish. Everything was delicious.

After dinner the three of us moved to the covered deck on the back of the house. The evening air was quite hot, but rain the day before had helped lower the humidity Cincinnati is so well known for. That, and the wonderful breeze made for a very pleasant hour of conversation, lightening bugs, darting bats, sunset watching and home-grown spearmint leaves chewing.

It got dark, so we decided to go inside and watch an episode of "Upstairs/Downstairs". It is a British PBS show that Ann loves. I was extremely unimpressed and antsy to go home. Cindy had already asked me if I would review a few of her recent paintings with her. I asked how long the program would be and she said she thought 30 minutes.

I remembered that Cindy had mentioned earlier that the ceiling fan in Ann's room  was permanently stuck on high. The only way to adjust the fan was by a hand-held remote control. Cindy was going to replace the fan because she was unable to get the remote to work. She'd even taken it somewhere to have it looked at. I asked if I could look at it while they were watching the show. She agreed, so I made my exit.

After taking the remote apart and checking everything I could get to, for wire connections or anything else that looked wrong I too was unable to get it to work. I prayed and asked the Lord to help me fix this remote. Cindy has always counted on me to help her with these types of things, and I've almost always been able to resolve the issue. This time, nothing.

I asked the Lord, one more time to guide my hands to fix this remote. Suddenly I realized, I was asking amiss. I wanted to build Cindy's confidence in my ability to help her. I repented as soon as I realized this and returned to the light of the kitchen table where I had left the screws and the back cover of the remote. My intent was to write down the model number and put the remote back together. Then, I thought, I'd do some research on google on how to fix the thing. While looking for the model no., the Lord showed me four little red switches. Tiny little switches. I felt led to go back to her room and try various combinations on the switches.

Nothing. I prayed again, but this time with the right spirit and attitude. "Lord, you know that Ann needs this fan, but that she can't sleep at night with it blowing full-force down on her. I know you love her. Please, Lord, show me the way. I will absolutely give You all of the praise and all of the honor for this. Please forgive my selfish pride."

I flipped one more switch. Hit the low tab on the remote and looked up at the rotating blades to see if it worked. After a few seconds I thought I was getting dizzy, because I was starting to see what appeared to be a visible blade popping through the blur. A few more seconds and I realized that the blades were indeed slowing down.

I went into immediate Praise mode. Jesus had completely answered that prayer. I don't know if it was the flipping of the switch, or simply the hand of God slowing down those blades, but however He did it...HE DID IT! And now, Ann saw a miracle of God, that He did, just for her, at a time when she needs to know for herself, how much He loves her, and that He is watching over her.
Praise the Lord. Friends, Jesus really does care about every little and every big detail of our lives. He is a friend that sticks closer than any brother.

Devotions

I want to recommend a wonderful little devotional book to you. I read a page from it every morning.

Jesus Calling is a devotional filled with uniquely inspired treasures from heaven for every day of the year. After many years of writing in her prayer journal, missionary Sarah Young decided to listen to God with pen in hand, writing down whatever she believed He was saying to her. It was awkward at first, but gradually her journaling changed from monologue to dialogue. She knew her writings were not inspired as Scripture is, but journaling helped her grow closer to God. Others were blessed as she shared her writings, until people all over the world were using her messages. They are written from Jesus' point of view, thus the title Jesus Calling. It is Sarah's fervent prayer that our Savior may bless readers with His presence and His peace in ever deeper measure.

He Still Speaks

Daniel Gerhartz, among my favorite living painters, posted a link on FaceBook to a video of his little brother, Dave. In this video he sings a little, and talks about how God still speaks to us today. I really enjoyed this, and hope you will, too.
